Unique Resources

Mathematical Patterns in African American Hairstyles

    This unique site has been developed by a mathematician and educator who studies the mathematical patterns embedded in cultural practices. Ths presentation focuses on the geometrical designs and patterns commonly used in hair braiding and weaving in African-American communities.

African American Contributors

    This site was developed by eighth grade students in conjunction with an integrated unit on Africa, and contains short biographies on many African-Americans who have made significant contributions to American culture. A list of several scientists is included.

African American Inventor Series

    This wonderful set of interconnected Web pages provides access to information for several different starting points. One page provides a chart of inventions by African Americans, while other pages focus on contributions by women inventors, railway inventions, the peanut products developed by George Washington Carver, and a special tribute to those having five or more inventions. A "must visit" site.
