ABOUT
THE PROJECT
The
Ohio Department of Education initiated the Ohio Science Institute
(OSCI) program to provide professional development for science teachers
throughout the state. Teacher institutes will focus on content area
knowledge, skills of inquiry, and instructional approaches that support
the Academic Content Standards: K-12 Science recently adopted by Ohio.
The Ohio State
University (OSU) was selected to develop Phase 1 of the OSCI program,
and is currently developing the leadership institutes for facilitators
who will conduct institutes for teachers of grades 7-10 during July
and August 2004. Development of the leadership institutes is being guided
by a statewide needs assessment to insure that the institutes address
the expressed needs of teachers and school districts.
This project will lay the foundation for a new era of professional growth
among science teachers throughout Ohio, professional growth that emphasizes
increased science content knowledge and research-based classroom practices.
Outcomes of the proposed project will include the creation of professional
development modules for science teacher institutes, and the preparation
of leadership teams equipped for organizing and implementing the institutes.
Collaborators in this project include teachers from high-need school
districts, science supervisors and curriculum specialists, OSU faculty
members in the sciences, and science educators involved in teacher education
at OSU and its regional campuses. Sample lessons and classroom activities
to be included in the modules are being piloted in the classrooms of
school partners.
During June, three 5-day leadership institutes will be offered, one
for each module being developed. The Institutes will acquaint professional
development facilitators with the modules and will prepare teams of
facilitators (each comprising “trainers” and “coaches”)
to use the modules in planning and conducting professional development
institutes for science teachers. Separate Institutes will be offered
for earth and space science, life science, and physical science, and
each institute will include attention to the relevant science content
area standards as well as standards for Science and Technology, Scientific
Inquiry, and Scientific Ways of Knowing. Each Institute will also engage
participants in research-based instructional strategies, sample classroom
activities, and familiarization with the wide array of instructional
materials readily available from online sources.
The group is based at 1929 Kenny Road, Columbus, Ohio and is led
by Dr David Haury from the OSU School of Teaching and Learning. For
more information about his program please contact Dr.
David Haury or the program Webmaster.
