AnnoTape is commercial software for video data analysis. Designed to index, analyze, annotate and provide transcription organization for digitized video data, especially when the data is being recorded directly onto a laptop computer. AnnoTape is available for Windows, Macintosh OS 9 and OSX.

This commercial software is used to analyze text-based data. Similar to NUD*IST. Windows only.

AnSWR is a free software system for coordinating and conducting large-scale, team-based analysis projects that integrate qualitative and quantitative techniques. It is intended for large projects where a number of workers must enter data into a common database. Access can be controlled by a single administrator. UK based, publicly funded organization that provides practical support, training and information for qualitative researchers.

Free software used to code and analyze text-based data. Similar to NUD*IST. Includes a statistical analysis tool designed to determine the degree of difference between the coding process of different coders. Windows only.

A suite of commercial software similar to NVivo. Primarily intended as a text analysis and transcript organizing tool, but can be used to code almost any type of data and explore relationships within and between coded text, images and other media. May also be useful as image archive software. Windows only.

Commercial software available from Sage Publications designed to analyze the tone of text documents and automatically code regions according to their tone or mood. Uses language analysis to look for properties such as resoluteness, optimism and completeness. Windows only.

Another example of well established and widely used commercial software designed to code, sort, edit and analyze text-based data. Similar to NUD*IST. Windows only.

Commercial software that allows users to code almost any type of data and explore relationships within and between coded text, images and multimedia files. Also uses AI to help users test their theories. Similar to NVivo. Available in both Macintosh and Windows versions.

Although inspiration is primarily intended as classroom software, many researchers have found it useful as way to map out their ideas. Inspiration is used to create flow charts, concept maps and instructional diagrams. It is often used to plan writing projects, organize notes and encourage connections between ideas. Version 7 includes improved web tools, hyperlinking and audio support. Inspiration is available for the Macintosh and Windows platforms.

This commercial software is produced by QSR International. Widely used by qualitative researchers for several years, it has a reputation as a solid workhorse. It is allows users to code, sort, search, edit and explore relationships within large text files (typically transcripts or other research documents.) Users can annotate the data, build hierarchical trees to organize it how they like and gather sections of related text together to create groupings of ideas. The most recent versions of this software are known as N4 (for Macintosh OS 7 – 9x only) and N6 (for Windows only).

This commercial software is also produced by QSR International. It is used to code almost any type of data and explore relationships within and between coded text, images and other media. It is especially useful for researchers who are working with dynamic, complex, multidimensional data or documents with complex formatting that requires a more flexible analytical approach than can be provided by the NUD*IST family of text only software. Multiple projects can be combined using the additional Merge for Nvivo software. The latest versions of Nvivo and Merge are only available for the Windows.

This commercial software is designed to log, index, code, score and organize digital video data. Like traditional text analysis software, it can be used to create hierarchic trees of coded information, but uses video clips instead of text blocks as the data unit. Windows only.

Designed specifically to help researchers using William Stephenson’s Q method statistics in their research. Free download of windows, Macintosh  and UNIX versions.

High-end commercial video data analysis software from Noldus Information Technology. Includes software and hardware for logging time code as well as coding, sorting and analyzing digital video.
